Chief Deputy Fired Upon by Suspect During Pursuit

Last night 12/26/2011 around 10:30 PM Prentiss County Deputies were dispatched to a report of a suspicious vehicle Northeast of Booneville.  This has been an area of recent thefts.  The Deputy Jeremy Pace arrived in the area and shortly thereafter located a Ford Windstar van matching the desription of the suspicious vehicle and stopped the van to identify the driver and check it out.  During the traffic stop Deputy pace noticed a rifle in the passengers side seat and asked to examine the weapon to see if it was loaded.  Also during the this same time frame the Deputy discovered drug paraphenalia and a substance he believed to be Methamphetamine.  Deputy Pace then returned to the drivers side of the vehicle and asked the driver to exit the vehicle.  When he opened the door the suspect cranked the vehicle, accelerated and fled.  The Deputy pursued the van from the stop location onto HWY 356, at that point Deputy Homer Stevens took up the lead position and continued the pursuit, traveling East to HWY 365. .  Once on HWY 365 they traveled to Burton and preceded West on HWY 30 then onto HWY 30 Bypass to HWY 45.  The pursuit exited HWY 30 Bypass onto HWY 45 North.  Other Deputies went 10-8 once they heard the radio traffic and joined the pursuit, which headed toward Alcorn County.  Several Alcorn County Deputies joined the pursuit once we crossed over the line.  Corinth Police were alerted and set up spike strips on HWY 45 within the City Limits.  Apparently the suspect, saw the Blue Lights and turned back South on HWY 45 to avoid contact with them.  The pursuit them preceded back South and at some point north of the Alcorn County Line the Suspect apparently had reloaded the 30-30 Rifle and stuck it out the drivers window firing one shot at Chief Deputy Derrick Pruitt, neither striking Pruitt or his vehicle.  When the pursuit entered back into Prentiss County and eventually Booneville, Booneville Officers depoyed Spike Strips and deflated tires on the suspect vehicle.  He then attempted to exit on HWY 4 West  but soon thereafter pulled to the left side off the road.  The suspect tossed the rifle from the moving vehicle before it came to a stop.

Terry Farrow 44 of CR 5061 was arrested and taken into custody.  He was charged with Felony Fleeing in Prentiss County and charges of Assualt on an Officer will be filed in Alcorn County stemming from the shooting incident.

We are very thankful that no one was seriously injured or hurt and no property damage done during the incident.  This was a very dangerous situation and everyone handled themselves appropriately.  My Deputies give much of the credit to stopping the pursuit to Booneville Police Officers on Edward Shift whose Captian is Jerry Bridges.  Their depolyment of the Spike Strips was textbook and worked perfectly.  After the chase was over, Officers noted that the suspect still had well over a half tank of gas in the van and could have potential led the Officers on a much longer pursuit.

Incidently when the Officers recovered the rifle, it still had six rounds in the gun with one in the chamber and the hammer back.
